From the 9th century to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it explores how Russia’s identity—caught between the West and Asia and constantly reinvented by its leaders—has taken shape. Putinism is not an aberration: it is a return to a fantasized past, a new version of mechanisms dating back centuries.
