THE YALTA CONFERENCE in February 1945 was only the culmination of a long story that had begun many years earlier; the story of an unlikely and accidental alliance between an old Bolshevik, an old imperialist and an old president at the end of his tether.
These three men, each in his own way, had to learn to work together in the urgency of war, while pursuing very different goals for the post-war period. Roosevelt was concerned only with the creation of the UN and a future that respected the will of the people. Churchill wanted to save his colonial empire and limit Soviet influence in Europe. Stalin wanted to annex part of Europe and create a vast zone of influence, forever separated from the 'capitalist' West.
In such a context, the most astonishing negotiations, the most stubborn demands and the coldest arguments always took place away from the cameras.
But fortunately, a few diplomats were precious witnesses.
